Actually he should do! He is the 'Wellard' actors grandson... so Wellard is now a proud grandma of a budding animal actor!

The winter here in the UK seems to have been going on for ever! Dogs get covered in mud or soaked every time they go out for exercise. Not to mention the dangers of frozen stretches of water in ponds and canals especially - let's hope it is soon over and we get a drier and better spring and summer which is more suited to outdoor pursuits, especially dog agility!

Mutts v. pedigree dogs!

Did you see the much publicised Pedigree Dogs Exposed [on UK TV] which has left most dog breeders and exhibitors incredulous and angry, and others feeling that it may have served as a timely reminder that there are issues that need addressing by the KC and breeders before it becomes too late?!

Then there was the Martin Clunes dog programme [in 2 parts] which was MOST interesting... and did touch on the same negative health problems occuring in pedigree dogs in the last programme. If you missed both programmes and own a pedigree dog do try and see if any of your friends taped the programmes. Most worrying!

The health problems appear to be getting worse and worse. Just looking at some breeds makes you worry - think of the poor Alsations, whose back ends and legs look all wrong, and from what was said on the programme it is being encouraged by the Kennel Club as the way they should be! But it causes untold problems later in life, and not that much later, either!

Arthritis, heart problems, heads too small for the brain, poor articulation, breathing problems, and so much more is being increasingly found within the pedigree dog breeds - in breeding is a major problem, as is breeding for required TYPE for showing. More worryingly, dogs with known problems are being made champions and are being bred from in large numbers - increasing the problem exponentially.

If you are thinking of a new dog for your sport - a working dog, from working stock, a mixed breed, a Heinz 57, would all be perhaps better bets.

The mental anguish, the vets costs, and the final outcome of this ticking time bomb is something perhaps best avoided.

It was horrific to hear how some of those poor animals suffered, and all in the name of 'best of breed'! I know of several people who couldn't bear to watch all of the programme - but it is best publicised, whilst hopefully, there is still time to at least partially reverse the harm being done to pedigree breeds.

I have heard plenty of complaints about the RSPB not allowing dogs on its reserves... but, I must admit though I do find it annoying myself, I can appreciate their stance when some people just won't keep their dogs on leads when specifically requested to do so, and some just won't clean up after their pets. This attitude makes it extremely difficult for responsible owners, and is so anti-social!

That said, I have found plenty of RSPB reserves which do allow dogs on leads to visit and have enjoyed visits to Dinas in Wales, which is not to be missed; and to various sites in Scotland with our dogs.

Have you enjoyed the Springwatch series on BBC TV these last four weeks? It is now, sadly, coming to an end with the last special scheduled for tonight I believe.

The RSPB states that it has had a good increase in memberships following the programme. You have an option to option to choose Bill Oddie's "How to Watch Wildlife" book as a free joining gift until the end of June. [If you already have a copy of it, why not put it aside as a gift for someone special.]

Summer Pests and Diseases

With summer just about to be upon us [hopefully!] in the Northern Hemisphere the following advice is at its most pertinent. As the warmer months are a prime time for pests such as fleas to spread - also watch out for ticks - it is a time to be vigilant and to check your pet regularly.

Flyball and the UK climate

The British [UK] climate always makes outdoor events a challenge!

When people have to travel to qualifying events for flyball or agility shows they often stay in camper vans or caravans [even tents]... so far this spring the weather hasn't been kind.

But a wet and windy winter and spring is often followed by a dry period - well we can hope, can't we [or dream]. Events take place despite the weather and it's great to be enjoying our sport even with the extra challenge provided by the UK climate.

With the extra fear of slips and sprains on wet ground, is now a good time to look at your pet insurance?

I have heard very good reports regarding:-

They take on older dogs and pay your vet direct... at least this is what I have been led to believe. I'm going to check it out further, and may even change over to them as a pet insurance for our seven year old RR.

This post is rather a miscellaneous collection...

Crufts is long over and forgotten! Personally, I think the coverage this year was better than we have had for some time. The extra programme devoted to things other than best in breed and show was a real plus.

Flyball, agility, and dancing to music all had some good coverage on that show... good to see.

British Summer Time [BST] is now with us, with it I hope for some better weather for all outdoor dog sports and training!

Health news for today is one of the many blogs by Dr Eddy... you'll find us on page 25 of his list of Neighborhoods. There is a lot info on health issues and quite a few interesting dog blogs to be found there too.

Dogs, dogs, dogs... it can only be Crufts

Crufts is nearly with us... it is from 6th - 9th March and held at the NEC Birmingham, if you cannot visit in person you will find that it has coverage of an hour daily on the BBC... enjoy!

Crufts was officially 'launched' in London in readiness for its NEC show, and to highlight the way in which dogs and people nurture and look after each other, Pets as Therapy and five PAT dogs were joined by dog lover James Caan of Dragon's Den and director of Fit Fur Life, which promotes the rehabilitation and training of dogs.

Not long now till we'll be seeing Crufts on the TV again!

Let's hope that Flyball will get better coverage this year... and less of the pretentious waffle!

Early March means Crufts again, and perhaps some other doggy programmes will be scheduled too after the Crufts show. Last year was quite good for new dog orientated programmes.

[I don't know if you saw the sheepdog trials which are scheduled over the Christmas period on UK TV... although they don't get the amount of coverage they got when they were first introduced many years ago, at least this last programme was a vast improvement on the ones which were shown for the previous 2 or 3 years!]

Christmas is such a busy time... new puppies take a lot of love and looking after, lots of time is needed... so Christmas and puppies are definitely not a good formula or mix.

Fireworks!

The 'season' or the celebrations for bonfire night seem to be spread over a longer and longer period each succeeding year in the UK!

So many poor dogs are terrified of the bangs, they hide, or they shiver and shake with fear, or both... I am hoping it will soon be finished with for their sakes.

If you have a fearful pet just try to reassure it, talk to it, and say positive things about the fireworks... as in 'isn't it pretty' in an upbeat voice! Some people say this works, worth a try!

We are so lucky in that our rescue dog seems to ignore them completely. Though one evening we were outside and some rockets went off and he just stood there with his head on one side and watched and seemed MOST interested. He just seemed to be admiring them!

You know how vulnerable your pets are when they come into contact with traffic - now please let me point you to a website which will make you think of the other animals who are in danger from the increasing amount of traffic on the roads.

The website I am going to point you towards is based in America, but the thought behind the email which I received from them applies equally to many, many countries.

Hop over to the Defenders Organization to check their 'Watch Out for Wildlife' posting. Large animals can be seriously injured or killed so please take care and slow down where signs are posted warning of animals.

Even if you don't care about the animals... your car, and maybe you, won't come off scot free!

In the UK there are a growing number of accidents involving deer, and they can be quite serious to the car, the occupants, and the poor deer who often appear from nowhere and dash out in front of anything.

Also please spare a thought for the hedgehogs during the spring, summer, and early autumn - and now there are increasing numbers of otters being killed on our roads.

If the only male in an area, or the only female for that matter, is killed the area will be without a breeding pair... please take care.

'Doggy Blog Clips' has been updated with loads of interesting clips. One from DogGoneFast is all about Flyball in the US, it has loads of information plus many interesting photos. All Flyball Dogs readers in America would find it of particular interest, though the photos and stories would appeal to most dog lovers. The blog itself tells of Flyball adventures in many different parts of the US.

For UK visitors, here is a link to the RSPB waebsite. An interest in all nature often goes with dog ownership, after all you have to walk your dog somewhere - and there is bound to be some 'nature' in the vicinity.

There are loads of interesting birds both in city centres and parks as well as towns and the countryside - and the more you learn, the more interested you will be!

Season Change

Throughout the world this is a time of 'season change'... and for many flyball clubs it will also mean a time of venue change. It could also mean more or less flyball on offer.

Dependent upon hemisphere, you will be gearing up for your outdoor season, or changing to work only indoors. Check out with local clubs to see what is on offer... if you are new to flyball, or just thinking of finding out about it, now is a good time to check.

Stop Abuse of Animals

Please do visit some of the animal welfare websites recommended on this blog, whether they be in past posts or in the margin. Some of the animal abuse you read about is heartbreaking - and the unnecessary cruelty is horrific.

On another, but related, subject ... can I ask all visitors to this blog to please click to visit The Animal Rescue Site... where, if you don't know already, you can give food FREE. It will help feed rescue animals. The more who support this type of work, the more can be done to stop abuse of animals.

When dogs are kept active and interested this appears to slow the aging process, I think so, do you agree?

UK television viewers who watched 'Silent Witness' will have seen "Wellard" from Eastenders performing in the first episode of the two-part Silent Witness this week. She is a busy 'actor' [who'll do anything for certain foods], but, she is also a grandmother, and a qualified Agility Dog. And, in my opinion, looks very young for her age!

So add some extra strings to your Flyball dogs bow, whilst they are still young and active!

Have you seen about the dog which was voted guide dog of the year... all the finalists were so worthy - but the one which won was the one which was so savagely attacked by a Rottweiller - yet Roz got her owner home safely afterwards.

It was subsequently touch and go whether her life could be saved at the vets, but thankfully all went well, and she slowly recovered, and is now back at work!

Not dogs, but whales - "In August 2007, less than a year after resuming a commercial whale hunt, Iceland announced that it would end the hunt. They listed low market demand and lack of access to the Japanese market for whale meat as reasons for the decision."

Doggy blogs

Flyball dogs is just one of four 'doggy blogs' which I maintain.

Though you may be interested in just flyball, or want to learn more about it, or have arrived by mistake! ... all are, in reality, interrelated.

All are about an interest you have in dogs, and are about the dogs themselves - and an extra interest for them.

First must come training at an early age - hence 'puppy training secrets'. Then your pet needs to be well trained and obedient before taking on flyball or agility - hence 'secrets of dog training'.

After the initial training, which is best accomplished when your pet is interested, then you can go forward to other interests for both you and your pet... maybe flyball or agility, or you could take on obedience.

Both sports suit different dogs, see which your dog prefers... and remember if you go for agility... you will need to be quick too, and give good and consistent hand signals.

Two vital things to remember with this blog... if you want to learn basics, plus what is the main focus of this blog... I know this isn't on topic, but there is only so much you can write about flyball dogs!

If you are looking for information on how to begin/start your dog in flyball, for info on where to join clubs, for info on obstacles [making or buying], plus hints and tips... then you ARE at the right place. You just need to go back to the very beginning of this blog - look in our oldest, and next oldest archives!

I don't want to go over and over the same old same old - and bore everyone rigid!

Thoughts on Rain and Floods

With all the appalling weather we are having in the UK, many outdoor events have had to be cancelled due to safety aspects. In all it's history The Royal [Agricultural] Show, which is held just outside Kenilworth in Warwickshire, has never had to be cancelled before... but this time the final day had to be cancelled.

The TV pictures from the car parks were horrific, even though we have a 4 x 4 we would not have attempted it because of the bottlenecks in the car parks and other vehicles being stuck in front of you! The parking is in a low area, with a river flowing through, which doesn't help matters. Just mud, mud, and more mud!

Our next doggy day out is to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Welfare Trust summer barbeque day... which is to be held on Sunday - dare I say the weather forecast is NOT for rain! Proceeds are to help finance the re-homing of Ridgebacks who are in need of rescue... a fun day for both owners and dogs alike.

Let's hope that the weather improves, and the clear up and drying out of great swathes of our country is effected with much greater speed than is normal!

Do you have a local flyball club? Then the answer to 'what is the best way to learn flyball?' is extremely simple... VOLUNTEER!

Most clubs of any sort need volunteers! Very few people are willing to give of their time to do any of the myriad of administrative tasks involved in organising the day-to-day running of a club.

If you don't have a dog who is suitable for flyball work, maybe your dog is too old, or too young, maybe too slow, but you still want to learn what is involved in flyball with a view to joining a club and training or competing at a later date - what better way is there to learn than to become a volunteer helper at your local flyball club?

Not only are you helping, but you are making like-minded friends, and learning the essentials... and all this by just giving a few hours of your time!

Flyball, for Ridgebacks?

Many people ask... which dogs are best for flyball? This will depend on which height you are tackling! But, as a rule, border collies are a brilliant choice... they have the speed, and want to be always on the go. Often a small mongrel dog will perform flyball really well, and sometimes Alsations can enjoy it.

Does a Ridgeback perform flyball well? Is it worth trying to teach yours? Personally, I'd say if you really, really, want a challenge!

They will find it boring in the end, far more to a RR's taste is a nice comfy sofa! All that rushing round chasing things rather perplexes them... they seem to be asking other dogs why would you DO that? Chasing balls is for those who throw them seems to be their opinion... or put more bluntly, fetch it yourself!

A note for all potential Rhodesian Ridgeback owners...

NOTE:- there are some unscrupulous breeders out there who are trying to pass off RR's which aren't the correct colour as "rare, or correct". If you are wanting to show your RR, then it must be of show standard colour. The correct colours are from Light Wheaten to Red Wheaten. No black, or black and tan like a doberman.

Ears and nose of those dogs with dark brown eyes will be dark to black, whereas dogs with paler eyes may have liver noses and lighter ears. Some white on paws and the front of the chest is permissible.

Dogs which do not conform to these strict standards should only be sold as pets, should not be bred from, cannot be shown, and should be registered as a non-standard colour - their purchase price should reflect this.

If you live in the UK don't miss this!

New laws are being stealthily introduced by some of your local Councils. You NEED, as a dog owner, to know about this.

Go to this Kennel Club News Item now. On the resulting page you will find details of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 - which came into force on April 6th, 2007 - amongst a raft of detail remember this item. It states that you should provide your dog with 'the ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns'.

Dogs like to run free, that's a normal behaviour pattern!

Next we come to the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 which gives an inordinate number of powers to your local Council. Some of the laws pertaining to cleaning up after your dog are only basic common sense, and every responsible dog owner cleans up anyway... but some powers, in regard to dogs being kept on leads, appear to flout the Animal Welfare Act.

Problems could be ahead!

Find out your local Council's policy... you will find a fine selection of information and assistance on the webpage mentioned above... check it out NOW.

Flyball Championship news and... Make sure your pets get their chips!

The European Flyball Championships are taking place over this Bank Holiday weekend. And the weather for the south of the country isn't set to improve much according to weather forecasts - so travel by road will be miserable, with spray to contend with and limited visibility.

The North American Flyball Championships are set for later in the year. The 2nd - 4th November are the proposed dates for the 'World Cynosport Flyball Championship'.

In Australia the National Australian Flyball Championships take place from 9th - 10th June.

You will find further details of all the above events at the live links above.

Just one more thing to mention... Make sure your pets get their chips!
Obviously, it is micro-chips which I am refering to... they do help to ensure, should the worst happen and your pet gets lost, that there is that extra chance of your being speedily and happily reunited.

But, click on any of the other pages which take your fancy, and you'll find lots of doggy facts, plus amusing trivia.

Now a reminder for UK pet owners - that the PDSA PetCheck bus is touring the country in a bid to try to improve the health of the nation's pets.

Dogs are the main focus, but other popular pets are covered too. Dogs get a free health check which will cover general health - they check teeth, eyes, condition of coat, and weight.

Sadly, last year's PetCheck revealed that obesity in dogs had increased to over a fifth of the dogs checked, and dental problems had also increased dramatically.

Are you having any training worries?

Difficulties can be overcome, you just need the right trainer and the right incentive for your particular dog.

Dogs are so clever... they can be taught to help the disabled with many daily tasks like opening and closing doors, retrieving dropped and hard-to-reach items, emptying the washing machine, and turning lights on or off.

The Guide Dog Association is the one charity which most people know about... and have seen qualified dogs helping their blind owners, or seen them in the process of being trained to be a Guide Dog.

Dogs for the Deaf can alert their owners when sounds are made... door knocked, doorbell rung, telephone, and smoke alarms are just some of the sounds which they can tell their owners about!

So, don't despair - your dog can learn all that you want it to - given the correct training and encouragement!

[Rather unlike some of the current collection of YOBs... one mentioned in our local paper has breached his ASBO for the sixth time... AND avoided a custodial sentence!]

Here are some details on what the pet food bill will do:

Help regulate the industry by establishing mandatory processing and ingredient standards and requiring more inspections of pet food processing plants.
Create an early warning system to help identify possible contaminants earlier and penalize companies that don't report possible contamination.
Ensure that any future recalls are conducted quickly by giving the Food and Drug Administration the power to order mandatory recalls of tainted food.

The dogs on the UnderDog Show just had three weeks of training with professional trainers together with their novice celebrity handlers before they began their careers on the UnderDog Show... what was achieved was truly amazing.

Some of them were mere pups really, others were older, but what shone out during the show was what could be achieved by dogs which had previously experienced many bad things in their lives.

"We have just one week left to prevent the slaughter of hundreds of wolves in the Northern Rockies. Unless we stop them, federal officials could eliminate vital protections for these magnificent animals and spark the biggest wolf massacre in the lower 48 state to occur in decades.

Wolves were eliminated from this area in the last century -- trapped, poisoned, hunted and harassed. Their re-introduction to Yellowstone National Park and Central Idaho in the mid-1990s was a major conservation accomplishment.

Now that achievement is at risk as officials in Idaho and Wyoming gear up to kill hundreds of wolves.

In February, officials in the Bush/Cheney Administration proposed removing gray wolves in the Northern Rockies from the Endangered Species List… and turning over management of wolves to Idaho and Wyoming -- two states more concerned with eliminating wolves than managing them.

Orthopedic dog beds... arthritis & injuries

An orthopedic bed is one which has been made with a type of 'memory' material... i.e. a soft cushioning substance which will cradle the joints and bones.

Once the weight of your dog's body sinks into the cushion it is kept still and comfortable. If your dog merely rests on top of his or her bed then his/her legs and body are more prone to moving and further injuries. Conversely, an orthopedic dog bed will hold painful parts of his/her body still and also provide a more stable environment where your pet can begin to heal.

The UnderDog Show with Julian Clary & Valerie

The UnderDog Show semi final compered by Julian Clary with Valerie his dog was quite an eventful show!

For those who missed it, there were two rounds which the dogs and handlers had to negotiate... one was based mostly on the Agility discipline, the other an obedience trial.

All the dogs bar one, Robson with Mishal Husain, failed miserably at the 'obedience' trial. Robson came out top by a very high margin with the judges, who were totally right, yet it was poor Robson who was eliminated when the public vote was taken into consideration, and he is now looking for a good home!

[The following morning Mishal Husain appeared on BBC1 Breakfast together with Peter Purves (one of the judges)... I think he was disappointed that the dog who was potentially the best of the bunch wouldn't be appearing in the final the next week!]

Some of the poor performances in the obedience could be forgiven... as Cookie was distracted by something which really upset him outside the ring, and totally fixated upon it, nothing else mattered to him, though a reasonable performance had preceded this distration!

The rehearsal, complete with food distraction was Chumps undoing... food was the only thing on his mind on the live show... though he gave in 'gracefully' when it was taken away!

But Casper disgraced himself by taking the food, and biting both Huey and the trainer who tried to take it from him... he will need some kind, yet firm handling, and to learn who is top dog in whatever home he finds after the programme is over.

It was good to hear that there are 10 prospective homes on the cards for Ginger who went out in the third edition of the show... he was a lovely friendly dog who deserves to find a loving home. I was very sad to see Anton and Ginger eliminated so early on as Anton had had no previous experience, yet showed an empathy and understanding which many people never seem to attain.

The Daffodil Principle

No, this hasn't really got anything to do with dogs [or flyball]... directly!

But it does bring back to mind when we first got our puppy, Shimba, in April one year a long time back.

We had a large enclosed back garden with clumps of daffodils - in the lawn mostly, although there were some in the beds and borders. As soon as he was let out into the garden he ran round at full speed biting the heads off all the daffodils... no chance of catching him, so we just had 'bald' stalks! [Just a good job he didn't try eating them.]

The Underdog Show... an update

The following blog about the Underdog Show has been added to all my 'doggy blogs' today... there is so much interest in rescue, and this show has been all good news for dogs in need of re-homing... so the details of the show are very heartening for dog lovers.

Although the dogs, some of which were hardly more than puppies, haven't done flyball - they have demonstrated that it is easy to teach a willing animal Agility and Obedience if you are a proficient trainer.

"Last nights show saw the number of dogs and celebrity handlers whittled down to four to compete in next weeks semi-final... and again the voting of the public to save Casper did not agree at all with the opinion of the judges.

But, part of the reason behind the show is to get the public to vote in order to donate some of the call cost to a charity... though in my opinion, and that of many other viewers, the belief is, that at least some of that charity donation should be to the Dogs Trust... or another animal welfare charity...

So Clive Anderson and Alfred were eliminated. And, happily, Alfred had already become firmly installed as part of Clive's family... so Alfred's tale [or tail!] had a 'happy ending'.

I don't know how long that web address will stay online, so I thought if you had full access to the entire address, should it be removed, you can try just part of the address and navigate to the information you require from the first part of the address! There is a full profile of the dogs, or as full as they can get it... and details of their new lives... a rewarding read.

The show itself last night gave the dogs and handlers two different challenges... one an Agility, plus obedience and tricks type challenge, the other to put on a type of show or play, which involved the dogs in doing whatever tricks and behaviours which could be incorporated into the play, one even showed what flyball dogs have to do by opening a box.

Casper and Huey came well at the bottom in both disciplines... and Clive and Albert were joint second, but as mentioned above, it was Casper who went through.

The results show had a demonstration of freestyle dancing to music - which is what the finalists will be expected to do - the dog was called Tapper and was handled by Gina Pink who really made my day by choosing "Ain't that a kick in the head" sung by Dean Martin to do the routine to!

Also featured this week were several Dogs Trust dogs who need a rescue home... they were promoted by the celebrity handlers.

So many sad stories in need of a happy ending!"

Introducing the new Animal Welfare Act... UK

Topical news... as from 6th April, 2007 the new Animal Welfare Act comes into force in the UK.

It is welcomed by the RSPCA. And it appears to require more responsibility from animal owners... let us hope it does what it is supposed to do. It is a sad world which actually NEEDS acts like this... sometimes you could despair when you hear so many tales of cruelty.

I won't launch into my feelings about the judiciary and sentencing policies... that's a whole different blog! [Non-existent, otherwise I'm sure it would create a great deal of trouble.]

Doggy Dancing, Julian Clary, and The Underdog Show...

The third programme of The Underdog Show with Julian Clary and his dog, Valerie, went out yesterday evening. It may not be flyball... but the novice dogs and handlers had to move to get round the Agility type course! Each week the degree of difficulty in the course increases.

Poor Ginger with Anton got eliminated, though they certainly weren't the worst! Ginger has to go up for re-homing as Anton's lifestyle precludes him from keeping pets. I'm sure they'll miss each other. I hope next week brings good news of what has happened to Ginger.

The results show always includes a professional demonstration of doggy dancing... doggy dancing [or heelwork to music] is what the finalists in the competition will be expected to perform.

Many people have commented to me about what happens to the percentage of money from the phone-in votes which goes to charity... the comments have ALL been in favour of at least some of this money going to dog/animal charities... and The Dogs Trust in particular.

DEHYDRATION

Dehydration is a serious loss of bodily fluids and can cause serious damage to the internal organs.

Dehydration doesn't only happen during the hot summer months, but, on warm days in a car, or even the cooler months if you park in the sun and leave the windows shut.

Sorry to bore those who are aware of this problem... but I am going to bang on about it again, and again! PLEASE spread this message as much as you can.

Every year you hear of some poor dogs dying in this unimaginably terrible way... I'm afraid I can't sympathise with those who cause this suffering, even if it does stay on their consciences.

But dehydration does not only occur when dogs get over-heated... it can also occur when a dog has illnesses associated with vomiting and diarrhoea. If a dog is dehydrated, the problem must be addressed immediately.

There is an extremely simple and elementary test to see if an animal is dehydrated. Try the test now, on your dog. It will give you some idea what is normal for your dog. Then you will have a comparison in mind if you are concerned and need to actually test to see if your dog is dehydrated.

It is a skin elasticity test... very simple to do. So, take a fold of your dog’s skin between your thumb and index finger. Gently pull that skin away from your dog. It won't hurt your dog.

When the skin is gently pinched up to make a small peak between your fingers, release the tension that you have on the skin. When your pet is fit and healthy, what you should see is... that the skin immediately returns back to its original position. There is elasticity there.

When dehydration is the problem, the skin doesn't quickly spring back to its original position. It remains as a peak, the may gradually return to its original position. This signifies a dehydration problem.

You might also notice that your dog’s eyes look sunken. And his or her gums could appear to be dry.

To test your dog's gums... press on the gums, with your finger, you will see them turn white by your finger. When you take your finger away the gums should rapidly become pink again. When your pet is dehydrated, the gums will be slow to return to the pink colour.

Fluid will be needed immediately. If your dog will drink, this a good sign... don't let him or her gulp down too much at once.

In cases of illness or severe dehydration, the dog won't take, or be interested in water. Veterinary intervention is needed immediately... as intravenous fluids will be required [and vital to recovery].

If you are able to 'read your dog' - to know when all isn't as it should be - then you will be able to know when an urgent trip to the vets is essential. So, take a few minutes NOW to do the above simple tests so that you will be fully conversant with what is 'normal' for your dog.

Vinegar and Cider Vinegar for pet health

I read the following hints in a book about the many uses of vinegar...

Get rid of [and prevent] fleas by adding cider vinegar to your pets drinking water. Start with a few drops and build up to a teaspoon in a bowlful for a small animal and a tablespoon in a bowlful for a large dog. Worth a try... surely better than putting a load of chemicals on your pet.

For a skin and coat conditioner after a bath use 1 part of cider vinegar to 3 parts of water as a final rinse. It works like a vinegar hair rinse, making the coat shiny, and is helpful in dealing with skin infections.

There are many vitamins and minerals and other nutrients available in cider vinegar... which are a bonus for your dogs health [and for our health too if we take it as a supplement in drinking water... if you want to sweeten it, use honey for an extra boost to your health].

Please make certain, when buying for internal consumption, to buy organic unfiltered and unpasteurised cider vinegar. It will look different to the ordinary cider vinegar in that there is a certain cloudiness to it and there will be a sediment on the bottom of the bottle.

It is always beneficial if they have somewhere where they can be let 'loose' safely for a romp... and it is equally good to be able to go with other like-minded 'doggy' people and dogs... so that the dogs can all play together.

Please make safety your first consideration... vets bills can be steep for a moment of inattention... and this is without mentioning the attendant anguish.

Just a couple of tips or rather warnings here...

1) If you buy toys to keep your pet occupied, please make sure they are appropriate for your size and type of dog. If you have a very large breed, small balls - even medium sized ones - can become stuck in your dogs throat. If unsure of appropriateness for your pet... get professional advice.

2) Never, ever, ever, let your dog play with sticks. Some dogs chew them and get splinters of wood down their throats, some get larger pieces. Some pieces will get stuck in your dogs mouth, or throat, others will be swallowed and cause problems in your dogs stomach.

Ask a vet, AND research this fully.

It is a frequent problem in some veterinary practices... and vets have been known to have to do operations on poorly pets, only to find pieces of wood of up to 9" long in their stomachs.

Feeding for flyball... plus Gastric Tortion (bloat) article

My idea of a short post on feeding suddenly brought to mind a post I made to Dog Agility Training on Bloat/Gastric Tortion.

So, first the feeding information, then a copy of the Gastric Tortion article...

Feeding... always make sure you feed your dog the food type and amount which is appropriate for his or her age, type, size, and work load. Your breeder, flyball trainer, or vet will be able to help. When working, flyball dogs use tons of energy! Your flyball trainer should be able to advise on when to feed, both for when you are going to a practice sesson, and for actual competition days. See my advice below on regularity of feeding. Please, never feed scraps or titbits from the table.

Always make sure you and your family eat before your pets... this will help to show who are the 'top dogs'. Make sure you are able to approach your dog whilst it is eating, and are able to take its food away from him or her whilst they are eating... this is an ideal opportunity to add titbits to the dogs bowl when it is returned to your pet.

Well behaved pets shouldn't pester for food whilst you are eating, nor growl when people approach whilst it is eating itself... use the tips above to help stop these behaviours.

"Gastric tortion is, thankfully, not that common a problem. But then forewarned is forearmed, and the more people who understand the symptoms and causes, the more dogs can be saved by prompt action.

If your dog is fed at a level which eliminates the need for it to bend down to eat, then proper digestion and a comfortable eating posture for dogs [and cats too] can be maintained. Eating when they are bending over helps make dogs gulp their food. In the process, the dogs swallow more air. An elevated pet feeder helps ease the swallowing of food.

Swallowing an increased amount of air can result in a condition called gastric tortion or bloat. This happens most commonly in large breeds of dog, and is life-threatening. Some vets recommend elevated feeders for dogs susceptible to bloat.

Bloat is usually the result of eating too fast. The dog's stomach fills with gas or fluid, causing gastric dilation or gastric tortion. Always make sure your dog has a period of REST after a feed. Vigorous activity, running, jumping, etcetera, immediately after food, can cause the stomach to swell and rotate.

As well as feeding at the optimum height another tip, which should help avoid bloat, is feeding small meals instead of one large meal a day. Feed at least twice a day, up to four meals daily... just divide the amount for the day into the number of meals you choose to feed. We have found four small meals, spread out over the day, suits the delicate digestion of our rescue dog best.

Excess salivation and retching, abdominal distention, restlessnesss and agitation, weakness, lethargy, a rapid heart rate - are all symptoms of bloat. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms after eating, even mild ones, seek immediate vet care, day or night. Though bloat is usually associated with large deep-chested breeds, smaller dogs can also become victims.

You will find that feeding at a raised level will be more comfortable for arthritic or senior pets too. If eating is uncomfortable, some pets may be inclined to eat less and so may not fulfil all their necessary nutritional needs.

If you think a raised feeder may not be strong enough for your particular dog breed, just improvise, even put the feeder on an old chair, or make a wooden box and put 'retainers' round the sides.

You might find raised feeders suitable for your pet at one of our recommended pet stores... just use the links on the left-hand side of this page."

Costs for flyball training?

Some people may ask what it costs to do flyball.

My answer is... there is no definitive answer... because many factors have to be taken into account as well as the basic training costs. Get your pet well insured, make sure it travels in comfort... and safely. If sessions are held at a long distance from home packed meals and drinks for both you and your dog will save on the expense!

Another way to look at the expense is to consider the damage a bored dog can do!

To find out actual costs of registration and sessions I can only recommend two ideas...

1) Look at Dog Agility Training ... which has price guides for Agility, surely flyball costs should be vaguely similar!

2) Check our previous post [of the 2nd March] which includes links to National Flyball Associations, where you will find loads of useful information, including links to some clubs. Once you find a club which you want further information on, you can just click their link, see what info they provide, and contact them for any further infornmation you may require.

Flyball Dogs are energetic, fun loving dogs

If you have a period of the year when flyball is not taking place, then it is wise to try to find something to keep your dogs mind occupied and his or her body fully exercised. The alternative is a bored dog who will find mischief... or mischief will find him or her!

Flyball is for dogs who are energetic and fun loving... lying on the sofa in luxurious idleness is not for them!

Another idea which you could practice at home would be dancing/heelwork to music... to this end some of the 'tricks' from the video [mentioned in the previous paragraph] could be incorporated into your routine... who knows, you may have a dancing star in the making!

Wanted... information on magnetic collars

Is there anyone out there who has experience of using a magnetic collar with their dogs? Either for epilepsy, fits, or arthritis.

We are just starting to use one for Loki, our Ridgeback... but I would love to hear other input on the subject. If it works, is successful and helpful, I shall begin to recommend the usage of one.

A trial and results from one dog is hardly a fair study though! And I don't want to be accused of being like many 'experts' who are guilty of using studies in the way described below...

I loved this quote from Dr. Andrew Shao "a pre-determined conclusion in search of a method to support it." It was used about a review of various studies on additive use [they only used those studies which supported their point of view] then came out with a review which claimed to prove their predetermined opinions.

How can YOU help animals today?

If your particular breed has a breed rescue trust see if you can help there, even by just visiting and assessing dogs which need re-homing you are helping animals. It is extremely sad to see but it has to be done, some are victims of cruelty, others may have been bereaved, or be the victims of family breakup... many sad reasons, many sad dogs.

Heartless describes many of these people... and the cruelty some of these animals suffer is appaling, our rescue Ridgeback was a victim of cruelty from 4 months old.

Now with more and more family breakups some extremely sad cases exist which make you wonder at the state of 'human nature'... well some parts of it anyway.

Whilst some people have the money to waste to fight in court for custody of the dog... others are left as total paupers with young children to look after and not enough money to keep their beloved family pet.

So, how can you help animals... just do what you can, please!

I expect most of my readers will have heard of this already... but I wanted to just mention it, in case there is anyone out there who can help too, once they know how to!

Flyball... plus! PLUS what?

Whilst Crufts is still fresh in the memory of most dog lovers... on TV in the UK we are being treated to another series by Victoria Stilwell of 'It's Me or the Dog' fame. This time some extremely unlikely pooches are being trained for Crufts.

The problems featured in the first show were:- a hyperactive dog. A dog who refused to have anyone anywhere near its mouth. The third dog had no official pedigree so was unable to attend the breed part of the show, but was 'renowned' for its addiction to food! Boredom can be a problem for some dogs. So the idea was for it to do dancing to music... and it performed brilliantly.

All three dogs showed remarkable progress and the owners were extremely happy with the difference in their dogs.

A small note... if your dog is hyperactive... first look at the food they are fed! [I'm sure that is the problem with most kids too... the food they eat and the junk they drink... but we won't get into that subject!]

The dancing/heelwork to music has been the real eye-opener at Crufts this time with the popularity vastly increasing... and when you can see what can be achieved in such a short amount of time, I'm sure it can only get bigger, and bigger. You basically need a dog which is food motivated... aren't they all?

Well there are a few exceptions, but with professional tuition there must be a way round this problem. Dogs who have done obedience or other disciplines like flyball or agility seem to perform better, so perhaps you could add this to your repertoire... or maybe you have a dog who isn't fast enough for flyball... maybe this could turn out to be his or her forte!

Was the sheer excitement of flyball dogs there for all to see at Crufts?

Had you been able to visit Crufts in person perhaps you would have enjoyed a fair amount of flyball. Not so on TV.

The messageboard at the BBC's Crufts section reflected what I felt about the coverage for all the events, with the exception of some of the breed judging... why do they ignore the Ridgebacks? [Maybe because the 'experts' can't compete for character!]... the group judging, and of course the Best in Show.

Many felt there was far too much waffle, too much wasted time, and far too little time spent on Flyball and Agility. Even Discovering Dogs seemed to get less of a mention, whilst loads of unnecessary items from the shopping section were shown on air.

The all too short air time given to Flyball Dogs did show the real excitement of the sport... and now the BBC Radio Five Live team are off to the Cheltenham Festival [horse racing]... where this years winners come from.
